How to Edit Your Google Business Profile

Editing your Google Business Profile takes about two minutes: sign in to the Google account linked to your business, open your profile on Google Search or the Google Maps app, click Edit profile, make your change, and click Save. That's the whole process. The part that trips people up isn't the buttons — it's knowing which fields Google reviews, how long approval takes, and what to do when an edit gets rejected. This guide walks through all of it, step by step.

This guide covers every edit you can make — and what to do when Google says no.

Two ways in

Edit on Search, or edit in the Maps app

Both routes change the same profile. Some features look slightly different between Search and Maps, and a few — like hotel attributes — are only available on a computer (Google, 2026).

How to edit your Business Profile on Google Search

This is the fastest way to edit your Google Business Profile from a computer.

  1. Sign in at with the Google account linked to your business.
  2. Select your business.
  3. Click Edit profile.
  4. Choose the field you want to change (name, hours, address, phone, description, and so on).
  5. Make the change and click Save.
On your phone · Google Maps

How to edit your Business Profile in the Google Maps app

On your phone, the steps are nearly the same:

  1. Open the Google Maps app and make sure you're signed in to your business's Google account.
  2. Search for your business name and tap your listing.
  3. Tap Business at the bottom right.
  4. Tap Edit profile.
  5. Make your change and tap Save.

You need to be signed in to the correct account first. If you can see your business on Google but can't edit it, you're likely not signed in to the account that owns or manages the profile.

Field by field

What you can edit, field by field

Most edits happen in one window, but the rules differ by field. Here's what matters for the fields people change most often (Google, 2026):

FieldWhat you should know
Business name Enter the name exactly as it appears on your real-world signage and branding. Adding keywords or locations that aren't part of your actual name violates Google's guidelines and can get edits rejected. If you change the name after verification, you may need to verify again.
Category Pick the one category that best describes your main business — that's your primary category. You can add up to 9 more. All locations of a business must share the same primary category.
Address Enter the full, accurate address. If you move after your profile is verified, you must verify the business again at the new address. If customers don't visit you at your address, you can hide the address and set a service area instead.
Service area Set it by cities or ZIP codes you actually serve. Be specific — overly broad areas get rejected.
Hours Set regular weekly hours, plus special hours for holidays and one-off closures. Extra hours (e.g., delivery hours) go in a separate field.
Phone number You can add up to 3 numbers (no fax). You can also choose to hide the number under More → Business Profile settings → Advanced settings.
Website Enter the full URL including http:// or https://.
Description Up to 750 characters, shown in the "From the business" section. No URLs or HTML. Focus on what you offer and what makes you special, not promotions or prices.
Attributes Factual ones like "Wi-Fi" or "outdoor seating" you can edit yourself. Subjective ones (e.g., "popular with locals") are based on visitor opinions.
Photos & videos Add storefront, interior, product, and team photos. An exterior photo helps customers recognize you when they arrive.
Menu / services Use the menu editor (food and drink businesses only) or services editor to keep items and prices accurate.
Social media links One link per platform: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, X, YouTube (available in select regions).

Review times

How long does it take for Google to update your profile?

Most edits go live within minutes, but Google reviews changes before publishing, and some can take a few days — especially edits to your business name, address, or category (Google, 2026; Semrush, 2025). Don't submit the same edit repeatedly while it's pending; that won't speed it up.

You can check where things stand: open your profile, click Edit profile → Check edit status (or see the edit's status in the profile management screen). Each edit shows as pending, approved, or not applied. If an edit isn't applied, Google usually shows a reason — fix that issue and resubmit.

Troubleshooting

Why can't I save my edit? Common errors and fixes

Google's own guidance for "try again later" errors comes down to a few causes:

Your profile isn't verified.

You must claim and verify your Business Profile before you can edit anything (Google, 2026). If it isn't verified, Google walks you through verification — often by postcard, phone, or video — before edits are allowed.

Google is reviewing your profile or a previous edit.

Wait until the pending edit clears before making another one. If you see a "try again later" message, wait 24–48 hours and retry.

The edit conflicts with Google's guidelines.

Keyword-stuffed business names, fake addresses, and promotional descriptions are the most common rejections. Match your name to your signage, keep the address real, and keep the description factual.

Someone else has the profile claimed.

If your profile shows an owner who isn't you, you'll need to request ownership through the profile's claim flow before your edits will stick.

Google itself has changed the information.

Google pulls details from other web sources and user suggestions, and may auto-apply them. To see where changed info came from, go to Edit profile → Collected info — you can review each item's source and delete anything wrong (Google, 2026).

Two storefronts side by side: a cluttered sign reading Joe's Plumbing | Best Cheap Plumber 24/7 Emergency marked Rejected, and a clean sign reading only Joe's Plumbing marked Matches your signage
Keyword-stuffed names get rejected. The name that matches your real-world signage gets approved.

If none of that works, contact Google Business Profile support directly at the Business Profile Help Center. You can also post in the Google Business Profile Help Community, where Product Experts answer for free.

After you save

What to check after you save your edit

Saving isn't the finish line. Within a day or two of an approved edit, check three things:

  1. The public listing. Search your business name in a private/incognito window (or a friend's phone) to see what customers actually see. Cached data can lag by a few hours.
  2. Your website matches. Your hours, address, and phone on your website must match your Business Profile exactly. Mismatched name-address-phone (NAP) details are a common reason local rankings slip — Google sees two conflicting sources of truth.
  3. Other directories. Yelp, Apple Maps, Facebook, and industry sites often feed data to Google. If those still show your old address or hours, they can push the old data back onto your profile.

A mismatched website is the classic NAP problem: your profile says one thing, your site says another.

Why it's worth it

Keeping your profile accurate — and why it's worth the effort

A complete Business Profile isn't just housekeeping. Google's own data says customers are 70% more likely to visit and 50% more likely to consider buying from businesses with a complete profile (Google, 2025). Meanwhile, inaccurate hours and stale info are among the top reasons customers distrust a local listing.

A simple routine that works: review your profile monthly, update hours before every holiday, add photos regularly, and answer new reviews within a few days. If you run multiple locations, assign one owner and one manager per profile so edits don't overlap — you can add people under More → Business Profile settings → People and access.

One more thing worth fixing at the same time: your website

Customers who click through from your profile land on your site, and if it's outdated, that's where the trust breaks. Votrix AI builds a complete website from one sentence — it proposes the structure first, then generates the whole site, including review pages in bulk from a single template. Building is free within the free quota (hosting included), every site gets a free subdomain, and you can connect your own domain for free. See the AI website builder for details.

Beyond editing: making your profile actually bring customers

Editing keeps your profile accurate. These four things make it competitive:

1. Use keywords customers actually type.

Terms like "emergency plumbing repair" or "vegan bakery east village" belong naturally in your description and services — never in your business name (Semrush, 2025).

2. Post regular updates.

Announcements, offers, and behind-the-scenes posts signal that your business is active. Fresh activity also gives AI search tools like ChatGPT more accurate, recent information about you to draw on.

3. Keep photos current.

Photos of your actual storefront, work, and team outperform generic stock images.

4. Respond to reviews.

Replying to reviews — especially negative ones — shows both Google and customers that you're engaged.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I save my edit on Google Business?

Usually one of three things: your profile isn't verified yet, a previous edit is still under review, or the change conflicts with Google's guidelines (common with keyword-stuffed business names). Wait 24–48 hours and retry, and check Edit profile → Check edit status for a reason.

How long does it take for Google to update a business profile?

Most edits appear within minutes. Some take a few days while Google reviews them. Name, address, and category changes take the longest; if you moved to a new address, re-verification adds more time.

How do I contact Google Business Support?

Use the "Contact us" option at the Google Business Profile Help Center. The Help Community is a free alternative, staffed by volunteer Product Experts.

How do I delete an extra Google Business Profile?

Sign in to the account that manages the duplicate, open the profile, and remove the business location. If you can't access the account that owns it, request ownership first. Our full walkthrough: How to Delete a Google Business Profile.

Can I edit my Business Profile without a website?

Yes. A website isn't required to have or edit a Business Profile. Adding one helps, though — Votrix AI can generate a site from one sentence, free within the free quota, with hosting and a free subdomain included.
