How to Delete a Google Business Profile
Here's the short answer: you can't delete a Google Business Profile the way you delete a photo. What you can do is remove the profile content and managers from your Google account — and if you truly want it gone from Search and Maps, you have to request that separately. This guide walks you through both, plus the three options that most people actually need instead.
Before you delete anything, know this: 84% of consumers searched for a local business online in the past three months (BrightLocal, 2026), and 87% of people who use the internet to find local businesses use Google to do it (Statista, 2025). That "Permanently Closed" label or a vanished listing is exactly what customers see first. Make sure it's the right call.
01 · Decide first
First, decide which of the four "delete" situations you're in
Most people who search for "delete google business profile" actually want one of four different things. Picking the wrong option is the most common mistake — it either doesn't remove what you wanted, or it deletes something you needed to keep.
You sold the business or no longer manage it. Don't delete. Transfer ownership or remove yourself. The listing stays live and keeps its reviews, which the new owner (and your old customers) still need. Google has a dedicated flow for this: Business Profile settings → People and access → transfer primary ownership (Google, 2026).
Your business is closing permanently. Mark it as permanently closed. This tells customers the truth, and Google itself recommends this step before removing anything. You can combine it with removing profile content and managers (Google, 2026).
The listing is fake, a duplicate, or at an old address. This is the most common PAA question — "How do I remove a fake Google Business Profile?" The answer is not the owner settings. You request removal of a Business Profile from Search and Maps directly: https://support.google.com/business/answer/16043467 (Google, 2026).
You're quitting Google and want the profile gone entirely. That's the two-part process in the next section: remove content and managers, then request removal from Search and Maps.
02 · Step by step
How to delete your Google Business Profile, step by step
You need to be signed in as the primary owner. Only the primary owner can remove profile content and managers — regular owners and managers can't see the removal option at all (Google, 2026). Also note: if you were added as a new owner or manager less than 7 days ago, you have to wait 7 days before you can remove content (Google, 2026).
Go to your Business Profile at https://business.google.com/ and sign in with the Google account that owns the profile.
Select More (the three-dot menu) → Business Profile settings.
Select Remove Business Profile → Remove profile content and managers.
If you also want the business shown as closed, turn on Mark your business as permanently closed.
Select Continue → Remove → Done.
If you manage several locations at once, open the Business Profile Manager, select the profiles, choose Actions → Remove businesses → Remove (Google, 2026). If bulk removal throws an error, Google says to remove the content and managers of each profile one at a time.
03 · What actually happens
Important: removing content and managers does NOT remove you from Google
This is the single most misunderstood part of the whole process, and it's where most other guides stop short. Google's own support page says it plainly: when you remove all ownership and content from your Business Profile, it doesn't guarantee that the business won't still show up on Maps and Search (Google, 2026).
What actually happens:
Your content is deleted permanently. Every post, photo, video, and review reply you or your managers added is gone — and it cannot be recovered (Google, 2026).
Customer reviews stay. Reviews and ratings are user-generated content. Google does not delete them just because you removed the profile. Someone searching for your business can still read them (Google, 2026).
The listing can still appear. The business may still show on Search and Maps unless it's considered ineligible under Google's guidelines (Google, 2026).
You can't manage it again easily. To manage the profile again, you'd have to re-verify ownership from scratch (Google, 2026).
So if your real goal is "my business should not appear on Google at all," the profile removal alone isn't enough. You need the next step.
04 · Full removal
How to remove your business from Google Maps and Search completely
If the listing should not exist — fake, duplicate, moved, or you're fully closing — Google has a separate request channel for that:
Go to Google's "Request removal of a Business Profile from Search & Maps" page: https://support.google.com/business/answer/16043467.
Pick the reason that matches your situation — "doesn't exist here," "duplicate," or "moved."
Submit the request and wait for Google's review.
If you mark your business as permanently closed first, it won't disappear from Maps right away. Google says it will slowly disappear from search results and then be completely removed (Google, 2026). In practice, that means days or weeks — not instant.

05 · Troubleshooting
Common problems when you try to delete the profile
Google users hit the same handful of walls every time. Here's how to get past them:
The remove option is missing. You're almost certainly not the primary owner. Open Business Profile settings → People and access, and check who holds the primary owner role. Only they can remove content (Google, 2026).
You just got access. New owners and managers must wait 7 days before they can remove profile content (Google, 2026).
You removed yourself and the profile is still live. Removing yourself only changes who manages it. The listing itself lives on Google's side — it's not tied to your account.
Bulk removal fails. Remove each profile one at a time instead of using the bulk action (Google, 2026).
06 · The fix-first option
Should you delete it, or fix it? The option most guides skip
Here's the uncomfortable truth: many business owners search "delete google business profile" because they're frustrated — they've moved, they've had a bad review, the hours are wrong, or they've given up on getting found. In almost all of those cases, deleting is the wrong move. You lose your reviews, your Maps ranking, and the easiest free way to reach 71% of consumers who use Google at some point during a local search (BrightLocal, 2026).
If your profile is actually fine and just needs work, fixing it is usually a better deal than deleting it. Google's own data backs this up: customers are 70% more likely to visit and 50% more likely to buy from businesses with a complete Business Profile (Google, 2026).
The systematic fix
If you're in that "fix it" camp, do it systematically — not piecemeal
If you're in that "fix it" camp, this is where we'd point you at doing it systematically rather than piecemeal. Votrix AI runs a local SEO check on your Business Profile — whether it's claimed and verified, how you rank on Google Maps for up to 10 searches, your reviews from the last 90 days and whether you've replied to low ratings, LocalBusiness schema, and NAP consistency. It then writes and publishes blog posts for you, tracks keyword rankings against Search Console, and keeps running SEO and GEO (visibility in ChatGPT and other AI search) automatically after the site is live. If what pushed you toward "delete" was "I can't keep up with this," that's the fix — not the delete button.
And after GEO, ChatGPT names the sample company first.07 · Starting over
If you're rebuilding after a deletion: what to do instead
Maybe you've already deleted — you're rebranding, starting fresh, or you want to start over. A few things to know:
Re-verify to manage again. If you deleted the profile content and managers, you must re-verify ownership before you can edit or post again (Google, 2026).
Old reviews may still show. Since reviews are user content, they can survive even after removal. A fresh start doesn't always mean a clean slate.
Your website is your real foundation. Your Google Business Profile is one signal among many. AI search tools like ChatGPT now cite websites directly — 23% of consumers already used AI tools during a local search in 2026 (BrightLocal, 2026). If you deleted the profile and need a website that actually works as the source of truth, Votrix AI can build one from a single sentence — it proposes the site structure first, then builds the whole site, with hosting included and a free subdomain or free connection of your own domain. Every site gets built-in data on traffic sources, page views, button clicks, and form submissions, so you can see whether the rebuild is actually working.
08 · On your phone
How to delete a Google Business Profile on your phone
The steps work on both Android and iPhone:
Open the Google Maps app (or Google Search) and sign in with the primary owner account.
Search for your business and tap the profile.
Tap More (three dots) → Business Profile settings.
Tap Remove Business Profile → Remove profile content and managers.
Confirm the removal.
Note that basic edits like hours and address live under the "Edit profile" or "Business" tab. The removal controls live under Business Profile settings — a lot of people stop at the Business tab and think deletion is missing (Google, 2026).
09 · If Google did it
Why did Google remove my business profile?
Google may remove a profile from Search and Maps on its own if the business violates Google's guidelines — for example, it's not a real business people can visit, or it breaks eligibility rules. Google's support page on business eligibility covers what counts as a valid business listing (Google, 2026). If your profile vanished and you didn't do anything, check the eligibility guidelines first, then contact Google Business Profile support to appeal.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I deactivate my business account?
There isn't a true "deactivate" button for a Google Business Profile. Your options are: remove yourself from managing the profile (Business Profile settings → People and access), or remove the profile content and managers from your account. The listing itself stays live unless you also request removal from Search and Maps.
Can I delete a Google Business Profile and start over?
Yes, but you have to re-verify ownership from scratch before you can manage the new setup. And keep in mind that customer reviews are user-generated content — they can stay visible even after you remove the profile content, so a "fresh start" doesn't always wipe your history (Google, 2026).
How do I remove a fake Google Business Profile?
Don't try the owner settings — you may not be the owner. Use Google's request-removal channel at https://support.google.com/business/answer/16043467, and choose the reason that matches (fake listing, duplicate, or wrong location). Google reviews the request and may take weeks to act.
What happens to my reviews if I delete the profile?
They usually stay. Reviews and ratings are user-generated content, and Google does not delete them just because you removed your profile content and managers (Google, 2026).
How long does it take to fully delete a Google Business Profile?
Removing the profile content and managers takes effect on your account immediately, but the listing itself may still appear on Search and Maps for days or weeks — Google says a permanently closed business slowly disappears from search results before being completely removed (Google, 2026).
