Most people leave Wix for one of three reasons: they want a better-looking site with less effort, more control and ownership, or to stop building and maintaining the site themselves. Here are the options for each, with the downsides included.

The short answer
The right Wix alternative depends on what you want to stop doing.
Best design with little effort Squarespace: polished templates, selling on every plan.
Most control and ownership WordPress: open source, endless plugins, you maintain it.
Long-term customer growth Votrix AI: a website plus SEO, AI search and social run every week, with every visitor tracked.
Selling products Shopify: the strongest store and checkout.
Designers Webflow or Framer: pixel-level control and animation.
Lowest cost or one page Hostinger for a cheap bundle; Carrd for a single page.
Why people switch
Why people look for a Wix alternative
The template is fixed. Once a Wix site is created you can't switch it to a different template; a new look means starting a new site.
You can't take the site with you. Wix doesn't export sites to another host, so leaving means rebuilding the pages somewhere else.
Freedom cuts both ways. Wix's drag-and-drop editor lets you put anything anywhere, which also makes it easy to end up with cluttered pages, especially on phones.
The free plan is a showroom. It shows Wix branding and doesn't connect your own domain, so a real business site needs a paid plan.
It's still your job. Building, updating and marketing the site take time every month, whichever plan you're on.

Questions
What is the best alternative to Wix?
It depends on what you want to change. For a polished site with little effort, Squarespace (see Wix vs Squarespace). For control and ownership, WordPress (Wix vs WordPress). For selling products, Shopify. If you'd rather not build or maintain the site at all, Votrix builds and runs it for you.
Is there a free alternative to Wix?
WordPress software is free, but you pay for hosting and a domain. Carrd is very cheap for one-page sites. Votrix is free to start: you can see your homepage before you pay for anything.
Is Squarespace better than Wix?
Squarespace is usually easier to keep looking good; Wix gives more freedom and more built-in apps. Neither builds the site for you.
Can I move my Wix site to another platform?
Not automatically. Wix doesn't export sites, so the pages are rebuilt on the new platform. Votrix's Maya rebuilds a Wix site from its live pages, shows you a preview while Wix stays live, then moves your domain with redirects.
What's the best Wix alternative for an online store?
Shopify, if selling products is the main job of your site. If you also want a brand site run long term, Votrix connects your Shopify store and builds the rest.
