How to Get Your Restaurant Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews
Restaurant AI search is diners asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews where to eat. Each engine cites different sources: ChatGPT leans on Reddit and food guides, AI Overviews on Google's own data. Earn mentions in those sources, publish a menu AI can quote, and test a fixed prompt set monthly.
Question 01What is restaurant AI search?
Restaurant AI search is the practice of diners asking an AI assistant where to eat ("quiet Thai place for a first date near Midtown") and getting back a short list of named restaurants instead of ten blue links. Restaurant generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your restaurant one of the names on that list.
It's no longer a niche habit. In the DoorDash and SevenRooms 2026 Restaurant Industry Trends Report, 22% of 3,001 US consumers said they had used AI to choose a restaurant. The same report found 41.6% of restaurant-related AI queries cite third-party platforms as a source, while only 39% of owners had optimized their listings.
GEO sits on top of two layers you should already have:
- Listings. Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, with identical details everywhere. Our guide to getting a local business recommended by AI covers that checklist, so we won't repeat it here.
- Local ranking. Categories, reviews and
Restaurantschema, covered in our restaurant SEO guide.
This post covers what's specific to restaurants: cited sources, the menu page, booking and testing.
Question 02Where do ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews get restaurant recommendations?
ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews draw on different sources, so a restaurant that shows up in one can be invisible in the other. Temso's Q3 2026 analysis of 21,534 AI answers and 95,597 cited sources about restaurants and coffee shops found the engines' top cited domains overlap by only 17% on average.

| Engine | Most-cited sources for restaurant answers | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Reddit (12% of citations, the largest single source), Time Out, Michelin Guide, The Infatuation, Tripadvisor | Community threads and editorial "best of" guides matter most |
| Google AI Overviews | google.com (47% of citations), then Instagram, Reddit, Tripadvisor, Time Out | Your Business Profile does most of the work; average answer cites 15.8 sources |
| Google AI Mode | google.com, Reddit, Instagram, Tripadvisor, Michelin Guide | Similar to AI Overviews, but only about 2.8 sources per answer, so fewer slots |
| Gemini | Time Out, Reddit, regional food guides (56% editorial) | Editorial coverage carries the most weight |
| Microsoft Copilot | Instagram, Facebook, Tripadvisor, OpenTable | Social profiles and booking pages get quoted directly |
Two caveats: Temso's sample spans 12 countries, so Yelp may matter more in the US than this shows, and Perplexity wasn't included, one more reason to test it yourself.
The practical takeaway: Google's engines reward your own profile, while ChatGPT and Gemini reward what other people write about you.
Question 03Which outside sources should a restaurant work on first?
Work first on the sources AI engines already cite for your city: local "best of" lists, local press, Reddit threads and your review and booking profiles. You can't buy a ChatGPT recommendation, but you can make it easy for the people who write those sources to mention you.
- Lists and guides. Search "[cuisine] + [city] + best" and note which guides rank (Time Out, Eater, The Infatuation, the city magazine, local food bloggers). Send each editor a short note when you have real news: a new chef, a seasonal menu, an anniversary.
- Local press. A neighborhood paper writing up your opening or your charity dinner becomes a citable page that names your dishes. Keep a one-page press sheet on your site with your story, signature dishes, the owner's name and high-resolution photos.
- Reddit. Search your city's subreddit for threads like "best brunch in…" and read what people praise. Never post fake recommendations or ask staff to; moderators remove them, and a thread calling you out is worse than silence. Answer questions openly as the owner where a sub allows it.
- Review and booking profiles. Yelp, Tripadvisor, OpenTable and Resy pages get quoted with their review text. Reviews that name dishes ("the brisket pho," "great for groups of eight") give AI specific facts to repeat. Google's review policy bans offering discounts or freebies for reviews and asking for specific content, so ask every guest the same plain question.
Question 04What does a menu page that AI can quote look like?
A menu page AI can quote is one where every dish can be lifted out as a complete, accurate sentence: name, what's in it, price and dietary fit. "Not a PDF" is the minimum (our guide to building a restaurant website covers it). Quotability is the next level.
Compare two lines:
- Hard to quote: "Pho Bo — $16"
- Easy to quote: "Brisket pho — 12-hour beef bone broth, rice noodles, brisket and herbs. $16. Gluten-free. Our best-seller since 2019."
The second answers "is the pho gluten-free?" and "what are they known for?" without the model guessing. Build the page like this:
- A "known for" sentence at the top. One line naming your cuisine, neighborhood and two or three signature dishes. This is the sentence you want AI to repeat.
- One-line descriptions on every dish with main ingredients, price and dietary tags.
- Dietary tags that match schema.org. The
MenuItemtype has asuitableForDietproperty with values such asGlutenFreeDiet,VeganDiet,VegetarianDietandHalalDiet. Mark dishes up inside aMenu→hasMenuSection→hasMenuItemstructure, and useoffersfor the price. - An occasion FAQ. Short answers to what diners actually ask AI: Do you take groups of 10? Is there a patio? Is it kid-friendly? Is there parking? Can you handle a nut allergy?
- A visible "Menu updated" date.
Google's guidance on AI features says there's no special markup for AI Overviews, but structured data should match the visible text. Never mark up a dish or price that isn't on the page.
Question 05How do you stop AI from getting your hours, prices or deals wrong?
You stop AI from getting your facts wrong by publishing the right facts in one obvious, dated place and keeping every other source in sync with it. AI engines fill gaps with guesses, and a guess about a deal turns into an angry phone call.
That's what happened to Stefanina's, a family pizzeria in Wentzville, Missouri. PMQ reported that Google's AI showed specials the restaurant had never offered, including a large pizza for the price of a small. Staff fielded angry calls, and the owners posted that they would "not honor the Google AI specials."
Restaurant-specific defenses:
- A specials page with dates. List current deals with start and end dates, and write "We don't offer other discounts" in plain words. If you run no promotions, say so.
- Holiday hours published early. Post Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year hours on your site and Google Business Profile at least two weeks ahead.
- Retire old pages. Delete or redirect last year's holiday menu, the closed second location and the expired Groupon page. AI will quote them if they're live.
- Don't block search crawlers. OpenAI says sites that block
OAI-SearchBotwon't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. BlockingGPTBotonly opts you out of model training. - Report errors. Use each tool's feedback button on wrong answers, then fix the source it likely came from.
Question 06How does an AI recommendation turn into a booking?
An AI recommendation turns into a booking when your reservation provider shares live availability with the assistant, which makes those restaurants the easiest to choose.
ChatGPT can show reservation times from partners such as OpenTable, Resy and Yelp. Yelp's integration also brings its reviews, ratings and photos into ChatGPT answers, and lets diners book or join a Yelp waitlist without leaving the chat. Google's AI Mode has tested agentic booking that checks real-time availability across OpenTable, Resy, Tock and others, then links straight to the booking page.
What to do about it:
- Make sure your booking profile is live and complete. Photos, menu link, price range and party-size rules on OpenTable, Resy, Tock or Yelp.
- Release real inventory. A restaurant that never shows open slots online gives the assistant nothing to offer.
- Keep your site's Reserve button pointing to the same provider, so the AI answer and your site send diners to one system.
- If you don't take reservations, say so ("walk-ins only, average wait 20 minutes on Fridays"). Clear "no" beats silence.
Feature availability varies by country and plan, so check with your reservation provider about which AI assistants it connects to.
Question 07How do you test whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini recommend your restaurant?
You test it by running the same fixed prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini every month, logging whether you're named and which sources each answer cites. Answers vary between sessions, so consistency beats volume.
Step 1: write 12 prompts, two per group. Include your city or neighborhood.
| Group | Example prompts |
|---|---|
| Category | "Best Vietnamese restaurant in Oakland" · "Where to get pho in Temescal" |
| Occasion | "Good restaurant for a group of 8 in Oakland" · "Casual date night spot in Temescal" |
| Dietary | "Gluten-free friendly restaurants in Oakland" · "Vegan options near Temescal" |
| Dish | "Best banh mi in Oakland" · "Who makes the best brisket pho in the East Bay" |
| Brand | "What is Lotus & Lime in Oakland known for?" · "Is Lotus & Lime open on Mondays?" |
| Comparison | "Lotus & Lime vs [competitor] for lunch?" · "Cheaper alternative to [competitor] in Oakland" |
Illustrative prompts for a fictional restaurant, not a customer case.
Step 2: use fresh sessions. Run each prompt logged out or in a private window in ChatGPT (search on), Perplexity and Gemini, plus Google to check for an AI Overview.
Step 3: log four things. Named or not, position in the list, whether facts were correct, and which sources were cited.
Step 4: act on the pattern. Named in brand prompts but not category prompts means AI knows you but doesn't rank you as a top pick: work on lists and press. Wrong facts point to a stale source. Competitors cited from the same guide show which editor to approach. Repeat monthly on the same date.
Question 08How does Riya track AI recommendations for a restaurant?
Riya, Votrix AI's SEO & GEO manager (our product), tracks how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend your business, so you don't run the prompt sheet by hand. For a restaurant, she also covers:
- Site audit. She checks the site for broken links, missing meta tags, slow pages and duplicate content, such as an old holiday menu still live next to the current one.
- Content. She builds a keyword plan around dishes, occasions and neighborhoods, and writes optimized content such as dish descriptions and occasion FAQs.
- Authority recommendations. She suggests where outside mentions would help, such as the guides and local outlets that cite your competitors.
Riya can't guarantee rankings or AI citations, and nobody honestly can; she keeps the work consistent. If you need the site itself rebuilt with a quotable menu, Maya, Votrix AI's AI website builder, handles that. Pricing is free to hire, then usage-based, with no monthly fees or contracts; see pricing.
Question 09What are the most common restaurant AI search mistakes?
The most common restaurant AI search mistakes are the ones that leave AI with nothing specific to say about you, or with something wrong to repeat.
- Generic menu descriptions. "Delicious house specialties" gives AI nothing to quote. Name ingredients and dishes.
- Fake Reddit posts. They get removed and can turn a community against you.
- Incentivized reviews. Discounts for reviews break Google's policy and put your whole review profile at risk.
- Stale pages left live. Old menus, closed locations and expired deals become AI "facts."
- Testing once. One logged-in check on your phone tells you almost nothing.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Security plugins and firewall rules can block AI crawlers without you noticing; check your
robots.txtand firewall. - Ignoring Google's own engine. ChatGPT gets the headlines, but nearly half of AI Overviews' restaurant citations point to google.com.
Quick answersFrequently asked questions
No. You can't buy a spot in ChatGPT's organic restaurant recommendations. They come from what the model finds in search results, listings, reviews, guides and community threads. You can improve your odds by earning mentions in those sources and keeping your facts accurate, but anyone selling guaranteed ChatGPT placement is overselling.
ChatGPT's restaurant answers often cite third-party sources such as Reddit, Time Out, Michelin Guide and Tripadvisor, and Yelp now supplies reviews, ratings and photos inside ChatGPT. Google's AI Overviews cite google.com far more than any other source, so your Business Profile matters most there. Keep both your Google and Yelp profiles complete, because each engine leans on different sources.
Restaurant SEO aims to rank you in Google's map pack and search results. Restaurant GEO aims to get you named inside AI answers. They share a foundation (accurate listings, reviews, a text menu), but GEO depends more on outside mentions in guides, press and Reddit, and on content written so AI can quote it sentence by sentence.
AI fills gaps with whatever it finds, including outdated pages, old listings and third-party sites. If your website has no clear, dated hours or specials page, the model may guess. Publish correct facts in one obvious place, update Google Business Profile the same day, remove old menus and deal pages, and report wrong answers through each tool's feedback button.
Fixing facts on your site and listings can show up within days to weeks, because AI search tools re-crawl pages regularly. Earning a place in "best of" answers takes longer, typically months, since it depends on new press, list placements and reviews accumulating. Track progress monthly with the same prompt set, not daily.
Usually not. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't appear in ChatGPT search answers, and blocking Google's crawler removes you from AI Overviews too. If you object to model training, you can block OpenAI's GPTBot separately without leaving ChatGPT search. Check your robots.txt and any security plugin settings.
SummaryThe bottom line
Restaurant AI search rewards specifics. Get named in the guides, press and threads each engine actually cites. Publish a menu where every dish is a quotable sentence, keep hours and deals dated and correct, connect your booking provider, and test the same 12 prompts every month.
