YouTube Affiliate Marketing in 2027: Description Links, YouTube Shopping and What Earns
YouTube affiliate marketing now has two routes. The classic one: put affiliate links in your video descriptions, which works on any channel. The newer one: YouTube Shopping's affiliate program, where you tag products directly in videos, Shorts and livestreams, open to Partner Program channels with at least 500 subscribers. Since August 2026, US creators can tag Amazon products that way too.
Part 01The two ways to earn on YouTube
| Affiliate links in the description | YouTube Shopping affiliate program | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Any channel | Channels in the YouTube Partner Program with at least 500 subscribers in an available market, not Music or "Made for Kids" |
| How viewers buy | Click the link in the description | Tap the product tag in the video, Short or livestream |
| Which products | Any affiliate program (Amazon, retailers, software) | Brands and retailers in YouTube Shopping, including Amazon in the US since August 2026 |
| Disclosure | Required: tick "paid promotion" when it applies, and say it | Same |
YouTube lowered the Shopping threshold to 500 subscribers in March 2026: "we're expanding access to the YouTube Shopping affiliate program to all creators in the YouTube Partner Program with at least 500 subscribers."
Part 02Why YouTube matters for affiliates beyond YouTube
In our check of Google's top 10 results for 30 buying searches (October 2026), YouTube held 22 organic positions, and AI Overviews cited YouTube in 7 of the 22 searches where they appeared, second only to the New York Times. A good review video can be found on YouTube, in Google results and in AI answers.
Part 03Video types that earn
| Video | Why it sells | Example title |
|---|---|---|
| "X vs Y" comparison | The viewer is choosing between two | "Arc vs Ember: which pour-over kettle should you buy?" |
| Long-term review | Answers "is it still good?" | "3 months with the Arc kettle: what broke, what didn't" |
| "Best X for Y" roundup | Matches the biggest buying searches | "Best pour-over kettles for beginners (we tested 5)" |
| Setup or how-to with gear | Shows the product in use | "My pour-over setup under $150" |
| Short (under 60 seconds) | Fast discovery, one product | "The one thing this kettle does better" |
Part 04YouTube affiliate marketing, step by step
- Pick a niche you can film: you'll need the products in hand.
- Start with comparisons and "best for" videos before single reviews; they match bigger searches.
- Put links high in the description: the first two lines, with what each link is.
- Disclose on screen and out loud. YouTube: if you "feature branded content, sponsorships, endorsements, or other commercial relationships," you "have to let YouTube know by selecting the paid promotion button," which adds a label at the start of the video. The FTC adds that the disclosure "should be in the video and not just in the description."
- Apply for YouTube Shopping once you're in the Partner Program with 500 subscribers, and tag products in new and existing videos.
- Link to your written review too. It ranks in Google, gets cited in AI answers, and lets you show the comparison table.
Part 05Amazon on YouTube
Two options now: Amazon Associates links in your descriptions, or, for eligible US creators, tagging Amazon products directly through YouTube Shopping. YouTube announced in August 2026 that "eligible U.S. creators will now be able to tag Amazon products in their Shorts, long-form videos, and livestreams." Separately, Amazon's Influencer Program accepts YouTube channels and gives you a storefront page on Amazon.
For description links, Amazon's own rules still apply: include "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." and keep it clear links go to Amazon.
Part 06Shorts for affiliate marketing
Shorts work for discovery: one product, one surprising result, under a minute. Product tags work in Shorts through YouTube Shopping, and Shorts can point viewers to your long-form review or written page for the full comparison.
Part 07Measure what earns
YouTube Studio shows how each video performs; your affiliate dashboards show sales. If you send viewers to your own review page, your site data shows how many arrived from YouTube and which product button they clicked, which tells you which videos actually drive purchases.
Part 08Keep publishing without doing all of it by hand
Votrix's AI automation writes video scripts by scenario, makes images, videos and captions, publishes them automatically, and breaks down what competing channels post. It also builds the written review site the videos link to, from one sentence (free, hosting included), and keeps SEO and GEO running so those pages rank and get cited. Built-in data shows which traffic source, including YouTube, sends clicks to the retailer.
