What Is Domain Rating (DR)? What It Means and How to Improve It
Domain Rating (DR) is a score from Ahrefs that shows how strong a website's backlink profile is, on a scale from 0 to 100 (Ahrefs, 2026). Backlinks are links from other websites pointing to yours, and they are the main signal DR is built on. A DR of 70 does not mean your site is "70% good" โ it means your links look stronger than roughly the sites below you in Ahrefs' index.
If you run a small business and do your own SEO, DR matters in one practical way: it tells you how hard the keywords you want will be to rank for, and whether a site is worth pitching for a backlink. It is not a Google ranking factor โ Google does not use it โ but it is a useful gauge of where you stand (Ahrefs, 2026).
This guide covers what DR is, how it is calculated, what a good score actually looks like, how to check it for free, and the realistic ways to raise it.
What Is Domain Rating, Exactly?
DR is a metric created by Ahrefs. It measures the strength of a website's backlink profile compared to every other site in Ahrefs' database (Ahrefs Help Center, 2026).
Three things to know about the score:
It runs from 0 to 100, on a logarithmic scale.
That means the higher you climb, the harder it gets. Moving from DR 20 to 30 might take a handful of new linking sites; moving from 70 to 80 can take thousands (Ahrefs, 2026).
It is measured at the domain level.
DR looks at your whole website, not one page. (Ahrefs has a separate page-level metric called URL Rating, or UR.)
It is relative, not absolute.
Your score depends on how your links compare to everyone else's, so the whole internet's scores can drift up or down together.
How Is Domain Rating Calculated?
Ahrefs does not publish the exact formula, but it does explain what drives the score (Ahrefs Help Center, 2026):
The number of unique websites linking to you (called referring domains). Ten links from ten different sites beat a hundred links from one site.
The DR of the sites linking to you. Higher-DR sites pass more "weight" to yours.
How many other sites the linking site links to. A linking site splits its influence across everything it links to, so a DR 10 site that links to only three sites can influence your DR more than a DR 80 site that links to a million sites.
Whether the links are followed. Nofollow links (links tagged so search engines ignore them for ranking) do not pass DR.
A practical result: a single link from a huge publication like TechCrunch barely moves your DR, because that site's link equity is split across more than 100,000 sites it links out to. Many distinct linking domains โ even from modest sites โ move DR more than one or two big ones (Ahrefs, 2026).
Is Domain Rating Important for SEO?
Short answer: yes as a gauge, no as a lever.
Google has confirmed it does not use third-party metrics like DR in its rankings. DR is Ahrefs' own number. What DR correlates with is competition level: sites with strong backlink profiles tend to also have the trust, content, and resources that do help them rank (Ahrefs, 2026).
But the correlation is loose. Ahrefs' own study found DR has only a 0.131 correlation with Google rankings โ a small positive link, far from decisive (Ahrefs, 2025). Ahrefs also found a DR 29 site ranking on page one for "best running shoes" and a DR 37 site ranking for "budgeting tips" (Ahrefs, 2026). Lower-authority sites do rank, especially for informational searches like the ones most small businesses target.
Use DR to size up how steep a climb a keyword will be and to track your link growth over time. Don't chase the number itself โ chase the links behind it.
What Is a Good Domain Rating?
There is no universal good DR, because DR is relative by design. Ahrefs' own answer: your DR is good if it is comparable to or higher than similar sites (Ahrefs Help Center, 2026). Judge it three ways:
Against your direct competitors.
Run your domain and your main rivals through a checker and sort by DR. If your competitors cluster around DR 40, then 45 is genuinely good. If they're all at 85, you have ground to make up.
Against your industry.
Ahrefs analyzed 600 SaaS companies and found the median DR was 62, with the top quartile at 77 and the top 10% at 86 (Ahrefs, 2026). A DR of 62 is average in SaaS โ but in local services or niche B2B, the typical DR is much lower.
Against the keywords you want.
Check the DR of the sites already ranking for your target keywords. If they average DR 85, that keyword is a long-term project; if they're in the 20s and 30s, you can compete now.
The scale, roughly
As a rough reference, brand-new sites typically sit at DR 0โ10, small established businesses often land in the 20sโ40s, and DR 70+ is usually reserved for major publishers and large brands (BacklinkOS, 2026). SaaS figures are from Ahrefs' analysis of 600 companies (2026).

How to Check Domain Rating for Free
The fastest free option is Ahrefs' Website Authority Checker: enter any domain and it shows the DR and the number of referring domains (Ahrefs, 2026). Run it on your site and three to five competitors to get your benchmark in a couple of minutes.
You can also pull DR (and Moz's equivalent, Domain Authority) inside free-tier SEO tools. If you want a deeper walkthrough of the options, see our guide on how to check domain authority.
Votrix AI automates this: it checks your backlinks, your website authority, and the link gap between you and your competitors (data from DataForSEO), so you see where you stand and exactly which links your rivals have that you don't โ without running manual checks.
How to Increase Domain Rating (Realistically)
Since DR is built almost entirely from backlinks, improving it comes down to one thing: earning links from more unique, relevant websites (Ahrefs, 2026). Here is what actually works, in rough order of effort:
Create something worth linking to. Original data, free tools, and genuinely complete guides attract links on their own. This is the highest-leverage move for a small business.
Reclaim missed links. Find places that mention your brand without linking to you, and broken links that point to pages you've moved โ then ask for the link. These are the easiest wins because the site already knows you.
Do focused outreach. Guest posts, resource-page listings, and expert quotes all still work when the pitch is relevant. Prioritize sites your competitors get links from.
Go wide, not deep. Because DR rewards distinct referring domains, ten links from ten sites move your DR more than twenty from one site (Ahrefs Help Center, 2026).
Fix the basics so links count. If Google and AI crawlers can't properly read your site, the authority you earn transfers poorly.
Two warnings: avoid buying links from link farms (they can be devalued or penalized, and they don't build real authority), and don't panic when your DR drops without losing links โ Ahrefs recalculates DR relative to the whole web, so the scale itself shifts (Ahrefs Help Center, 2026).
Most of this work โ researching keywords, analyzing competitor backlinks, drafting outreach emails, writing and publishing the content that earns links โ can be handled by an agent. Votrix AI does keyword research and competitor analysis, writes and publishes articles, identifies pages that aren't ranking and rewrites them, and sends outreach emails for links and mentions automatically. You can start free, then pay by usage as you grow.
For a step-by-step on building links, our guide on how to increase domain authority covers the same playbook from the Moz-metric side.

Votrix researches keywords, analyzes competitor backlinks, writes and publishes the content that earns links, and sends outreach emails automatically โ then shows the result in your rankings.
How Long Does It Take to Improve DR?
There's no fixed timeline, and anyone quoting one is guessing. What is predictable is the shape of the curve: DR is logarithmic, so early gains come fast and later ones are slow. Going from DR 10 to 20 is realistic within months of steady link earning; going from 50 to 60 can take years (Ahrefs, 2026).
A more useful timeline question is "how long until my links affect rankings?" New links typically take weeks to show their full effect, and rankings respond gradually. Connect your site to Google Search Console to track real clicks and impressions rather than watching a third-party score. Votrix AI connects to Google Search Console and shows your true rankings, clicks, and impressions alongside authority data.
Domain Rating vs Domain Authority: Which Should You Track?
They measure the same idea โ site-wide backlink strength โ but from different companies with different formulas:
Domain RatingDomain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' metric, based on referring domains and their strength.
Domain AuthorityDomain Authority (DA) is Moz's metric, also 0โ100, built from its own link index and machine-learning model.
Neither is used by Google, and the two will rarely match for the same site. Pick one, benchmark against competitors using the same tool, and track it consistently. Our full comparison is here: Domain Authority vs Domain Rating. For what a good DA looks like, see what is a good domain authority; for a plain-English primer, see domain authority explained.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good domain rating for a small business website?
There's no fixed number. Ahrefs says your DR is good if it matches or beats similar sites in your niche (Ahrefs Help Center, 2026). Many small businesses sit between DR 20 and 40 โ what matters is whether that beats the sites you compete with, not the number itself.
Does DR directly affect my Google rankings?
No. Google doesn't use DR; it's Ahrefs' internal metric. Ahrefs' research found only a small correlation (0.131) between DR and rankings, and sites with DR under 30 do rank on page one for plenty of keywords (Ahrefs, 2025; Ahrefs, 2026).
What are the main types of backlinks?
The three types most SEOs talk about are natural links (earned because someone found your content useful), manual links (earned through outreach, guest posts, or listings), and self-created links (directories, forums, comments). Natural and manual links from relevant sites are what build DR; self-created links from spammy sources can be ignored or penalized by Google.
What does "domain" mean on a website?
The domain is your website's address โ the part after "www." or "https://" that ends in .com, .org, or another extension. For example, votrixai.com is a domain. DR measures link strength for your entire domain, including all its pages.
Is .org more credible than .com?
Not for rankings or for DR. Domain extension doesn't matter to Google as long as it's a standard top-level domain (Ahrefs, 2026). Users may associate .org with nonprofits, but that perception doesn't affect your DR or your rankings.
Why did my DR drop when I didn't lose any links?
DR is calculated relative to every site in Ahrefs' index. If other sites gained links faster than yours, your relative score can fall even when your own links are unchanged (Ahrefs Help Center, 2026).
How often should I check my DR?
Monthly is plenty. DR moves slowly and recalculates as Ahrefs' index changes, so daily checking mostly creates noise. Spend the time on earning links instead.
